Danny Whitten wrote the song, and Crazy Horse first recorded it for their 1971 album. Rod Stewart's version, from his 1975 album Atlantic Crossing, topped the UK singles chart in 1977 as a double A-side. Everything but the Girl released their version as a stand-alone single in 1988, and it was added to later pressings of Idlewild. Thorn has said that Stewart was a heroic figure in her home growing up, that her brother Keith owned his albums, and that she had always liked Atlantic Crossing.
The single reached number 3 in the UK, number 3 in Ireland and number 19 in New Zealand. It was the duo's first British top 10 hit, and it stayed their only one until 1995, when the Todd Terry remix of "Missing" also peaked at number 3. A live recording of it is on the 2012 deluxe reissue of Amplified Heart.
