Watt wrote the lyrics of "Walking Wounded" while Spring Heel Jack, the duo of John Coxon and Ashley Wales, composed the music and produced the track. It was recorded in 1995 at Little Joey's, Milo and The Strongroom in London. The album carries two versions, the album version as track five and an Omni Trio remix as the last track. It was the duo's first single on Virgin Records, after Blanco y Negro had dropped them.
It was released in the UK as the first single from the album on 8 April 1996 and entered at number 6, giving the duo their third top 10 hit. It stayed in the UK top 100 for 12 non-consecutive weeks and reached number 2 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. In the United States "Wrong" served as lead single instead. Record Mirror's Andy Beevers gave it five out of five, and Music Week named it Single of the Week for 30 March 1996. Melody Maker's Victoria Segal said Thorn's voice was almost unbearably vulnerable on it. The black-and-white video features Thorn, Watt and others holding up picture frames in front of people.
