Missing

"Missing" was written by Thorn and Watt and produced by the duo with John Coxon. It was recorded in London between December 1993 and April 1994 and released as the second single from Amplified Heart on 8 August 1994, as an EP. It did little at first. The Todd Terry remix, issued in October 1995, reached number 3 in the UK in November 1995 and number 1 in Germany. In the United States it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 94 in the week ending 12 August 1995 and peaked at number 2 in 1996. It logged 55 weeks on the chart and was the first single to spend an uninterrupted year there. It sold three million copies worldwide and is double platinum in the UK.

Thorn told Rolling Stone that the song was written with a dance idea in mind, and that after the duo gave it a laid-back house groove, Terry took it in a strong New York house direction. Terry himself said he just added a beat and a bassline. Pitchfork's Philip Sherburne called the remix a masterpiece while noting that the original has quirks of its own, among them a loud cowbell and a chorus about missing someone like the deserts miss the rain. The music video was directed by Mark Szaszy and shows Thorn and Watt in an apartment, apart and missing each other, with Thorn walking around Balham and Clapham South.

Rolling Stone ranked it number 54 on its list of the 200 greatest dance songs in 2022, and Billboard placed it at number 25 on its 100 best dance songs list in 2025.
