Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers

The first solo album, with country and baroque touches, overshadowed on release by the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday.

Columbia

Clark's first solo album came out on Columbia in 1967, credited with the Gosdin Brothers, Vern and Rex, who sang backing vocals. The musicians also included Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Van Dyke Parks, Clarence White, and Doug Dillard on banjo for Keep on Pushin'.

The music mixes pop, country rock and baroque psychedelic tracks. It drew favourable reviews, but it was released almost at the same time as the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday on the same label, and sold badly. David Bennun in the Guardian called it a glorious countrified psych-pop album. It was reissued in 1972 as Collector's Series: Early LA Sessions and in 1991 as Echoes.
