Recorded in 1968 and issued in the United States by A&M that October, this album followed Clark's second departure from the Byrds and Doug Dillard's departure from the Dillards. Bernie Leadon co-wrote six of the songs and played on it. Larry Marks produced and Dick Bogert engineered. Uncut describes a mix of mandolin, dobro, banjo, guitar, harpsichord and plentiful mountain harmonies, anchored by Clark's baritone, and bassist David Jackson remembered that the album was not planned: the four of them turned up each day and played.

Because Clark would not tour, a short run of shows at the Troubadour was the only promotion, and the first of them went badly. The record was a commercial failure. Train Leaves Here This Morning, which Clark wrote with Leadon, was later covered by the Eagles on their debut album, and Linda Ronstadt recorded She Darked the Sun on Silk Purse. Matthew Greenwald called it perhaps Clark's most brilliant recording.
