Roadmaster was compiled from unreleased recordings made for A&M between 1970 and 1972. Eight tracks come from an April 1972 session with Clarence White, Chris Ethridge, Spooner Oldham, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Byron Berline and Michael Clarke. Two, One in a Hundred and She's the Kind of Girl, come from an unissued single that reassembled the five original Byrds. The last, Here Tonight, was recorded with the Flying Burrito Brothers. Jim Dickson produced the Byrds and Burrito tracks, and Chris Hinshaw the rest.
It was released first in the Netherlands, later in Japan and Germany, and reached American shops on CD only in 1994. Uncut notes that Clark's most straightforward country rock effort reached American record shops as a Dutch import. In the Guardian, David Bennun singled out the 1972 version of She Don't Care About Time on these sessions as the finest of Clark's revisions of his own songs.
