Goldfrapp and Gregory wrote it together after being introduced in 1999, before deciding to form the band. Work on it continued in September 1999 in the rented Wiltshire bungalow, and the duo recorded outdoors, drawing on nature. It was first called Your Lovely Head. It was written and produced by the two of them.

The sound is built on whistling of the melody of the Beatles' Strawberry Fields Forever, cold vocals, harpsichord and strings. What many take for a theremin is Alison's voice run through a Korg MS-20 synthesiser. The song was inspired by Shirley Bassey and the film director Sergio Leone. Adrian Utley played bass, John Parish drums and Stuart Gordon violin and viola.

It came out as the first single in May 2000 and did not chart. Reissued in November 2001 as a double A-side with Pilots, it reached number 68. It has been used in the films Swept Away, My Summer of Love and 99 francs, and in a 2000 BMW commercial. Pitchfork placed it at number 493 in its list of the top 500 tracks of the 2000s.
