Alison and Will wrote it in late 2004 near Bath, jamming in the studio, and most of it was composed on an old Roland String synth keyboard. The song is about the importance and meaning that one person shares with another, even if it may not last. Alison said its lyrics were a little more reflective and sensual than those she wrote for Felt Mountain and Black Cherry. Nick Batt played synthesiser and programmed, and Mark Spike Stent mixed it.

It was released in October 2005, entering the UK chart at number nine on 7 November. In the United States it was the duo's second consecutive number one on the Dance Club chart. The video, directed by Dawn Shadforth, is set in a plastic surgery clinic where staff and patients have dogs' heads, a nod to the lyric about being like a dog to get someone. Remixes include a main mix by Alan Braxe and Fred Falke running over seven minutes, and one by the Icelandic group Mum. The song appeared in Target commercials in late 2006 and was covered by Jont for a 2007 compilation. Goldfrapp gave only one North American concert in 2005, at the Nokia Theatre in New York on 5 December.
