Alison and Will wrote and produced it for Felt Mountain, and it came out as the album's second single in November 2000. It did not enter the UK singles chart at first, but reached number 29 on the UK Indie Chart and number 94 in the Netherlands in January 2001. Alison said the song deals with genetic engineering, which she compares to fascism.

A remix, Utopia (Genetically Enriched), was released on 11 June 2001 as the album's fourth single. It became the duo's first song to chart in the UK, debuting at number 62 the week of 17 June 2001 and reaching number eight on the Indie Chart. The song also played over the end credits of the 2024 film Afraid.
