Gazeuse! was released in late 1976 as the seventh album under the Gong name and the de facto debut of Pierre Moerlen's Gong, and was retitled Expresso in the United States. It is all instrumental, jazz-driven and built around vibraphone, and Virgin issued it under the Gong name for contractual reasons. Dennis MacKay produced and Stephen W Tayler engineered. The writing is split between Moerlen and the guitarist Allan Holdsworth, apart from the closing Mireille by Francis Moze. Shadows Of reworks Holdsworth's Velvet Darkness from his 1976 album of that name.

Its successor Expresso II, released in March 1978, was the last Gong-related album on Virgin. Guests included Mick Taylor, Holdsworth, Bon Lozaga and the violinist Darryl Way, and the band went on to Arista.
