Kiss Each Other Clean came out on 4AD worldwide and Warner Bros. in the United States. The title is a line from its closer, Your Fake Name Is Good Enough for Me. Beam told Spin it was a focused pop record, like the early-to-mid-1970s AM radio music people heard in their parents' cars. He told Pitchfork's Amanda Petrusich that it was the difference between Blue and Court and Spark: "this is a Court and Spark record." He and Brian Deck wanted an early Elton John sound, with the vocals mixed high and the other sounds dry. Beam recorded a good part of it at his home studio in Dripping Springs, Texas.

The first track, Walking Far from Home, appeared on 26 November 2010 as a Record Store Day Black Friday single, and Tree by the River was a free download from his website. On 5 January 2011 he played all but one of the songs at the Greene Space in New York for broadcast on NPR's website.

Joe Tangari of Pitchfork called it in some ways even more ambitious than The Shepherd's Dog, picked Rabbit Will Run as an easy highlight, and thought the horns worked well on Your Fake Name Is Good Enough for Me but not on Big Burned Hand. He concluded that it was not quite on the level of its predecessor. In 2017 Paste ranked it number 65 on its list of the 100 best indie folk albums.
