Woman King was the fourth Iron & Wine EP. It was produced at Engine Studios in August 2004, and it built on the studio sound of Our Endless Numbered Days with the addition of electric guitars. Each of its tracks features a spiritual female figure and carries subtle Biblical undertones, although Beam has said in interviews that he is agnostic.
Joe Tangari, reviewing Kiss Each Other Clean, named it with The Shepherd's Dog as the place where Beam perfected a whisper-plus-falsetto layering of his voice.
