Jockstrap

A London duo of Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye who met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, signed to Warp and then Rough Trade, and made the Wicked City EP (2020) and the Mercury-nominated album I Love You Jennifer B (2022).

Guildhall and the first songs

Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye met in 2016 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, she studying jazz violin and he electronic music; Skye finished with a first in electronic music and Ellery with a 2:1 in jazz. Ellery wrote her first Jockstrap song in August 2017 and they began working together the following month, with Skye producing. Their debut single, "I Want Another Affair", came out that year, and they played their first gig in March 2018 with a live band: Michael Dunlop on bass, Melchior Giedroyc on drum pads and Lewis Evans on flute and percussion.

The first EP, Love Is the Key to the City, appeared on Kaya Kaya Records on November 2, 2018. Wikipedia credits a 21-piece student string ensemble on it, and it includes "Hayley" and "Joy". A remix EP, Lost My Key in the <3 Club <3, followed in April 2019. Ellery is also a member of Black Country, New Road, and the duo's own working method has stayed fixed: they make music in Skye's room, where Ellery writes the lyrics and Skye arranges.

Warp, Wicked City and Rough Trade

The duo signed to Warp in early 2020, announced alongside the single "Acid", and "The City" followed on April 28. Wicked City, a five-track EP produced by Skye, came out on Warp on June 19, 2020 and runs 20:48; it includes "Robert", a collaboration with Injury Reserve, "Acid", "Yellow in Green", "The City" and "City Hell". Ellery has described it as a breakup and breakdown record, and the songs were written and finished over a year and a half to two years while the pair were still studying. Metacritic lists 80 out of 100 from six reviews, with DIY giving 4.5 stars and NME 4 out of 5. A mixtape of remixes, Beavercore, followed in September 2020, and in place of videos they staged a virtual exhibition at implied.gallery.

In November 2021 they signed to Rough Trade, and the single "50/50" appeared on November 17. The debut album I Love You Jennifer B was released on September 9, 2022, runs 44:11, was produced by Skye, and features 18 additional string players under the conductor Angus Webster. It holds a Metacritic score of 89, a Pitchfork score of 8.4, a UK chart peak of 57 and a place on the 2023 Mercury Prize shortlist; DIY made it its album of the year. A remix album, I<3UQTINVU, came out on November 3, 2023, and NME's Max Pilley wrote that it must be considered an entirely separate, and brilliant, full-length Jockstrap album.
