The opening track of Only by the Night is built on a three-note riff played by the bassist, Jared Followill, through a Boss ME50 multi-effects pedal that adds an octave sweep recalling a DigiTech Whammy. It came 24th in the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2008.
NME's Gavin Haynes wrote that as a declaration of intent it may be the best thing the band had done, and described a sonic glitch more at home in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop than in a Nashville studio. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis thought its disembodied bleeps and arcs of feedback suitably chilling, and Pitchfork's Ian Cohen said it set the bar unrealistically high for the rest of the album.
