The first track on Youth and Young Manhood was issued as a promotional single on 26 May 2003, ahead of the album. It was used in a Ford Focus commercial and as the opening song of the video game FIFA 2004. It also appears as a track on the CD single of Molly's Chambers.
Two critics reached for the White Stripes. The Guardian's Betty Clarke said Caleb Followill tears into it and "makes the White Stripes sound about as bluesy as Wham!" Pitchfork's Scott Plagenhoef, who disliked most of the album, said its gritty, minimalist stomp could pass for them. Rolling Stone's Greg Kot wrote that the group greets the "Red Morning Light" with "bloodshot conviction."
