The second single from Only by the Night entered the American and British charts on 8 December 2008. It reached number two in the UK and number four on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's first top-five hit in the US, and spent 57 weeks on that chart. On American radio it topped the Mainstream Top 40, Adult Top 40, Alternative Songs and Triple A charts, only the fourth song to top all four. By July 2013 it had passed four million downloads in the US. At the 52nd Grammys it won Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Rock Song, and it was nominated for Song of the Year. The band performed it live at the Brit Awards in 2009.

Producer Jacquire King played keyboards on the recording. Sophie Muller directed the video, which combines tour footage with Caleb Followill singing on a sofa in a penthouse above the New York skyline at night. NME's Gavin Haynes called it easily the best 80s power ballad of 2008, though he warned the band might be mistaking bluster for brilliance. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis saw no doubting its efficacy as a stadium-rock anthem.

Covers

Pixie Lott recorded it as the B-side of Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh), and the track peaked at number 41 in the UK. Laura Jansen's piano version charted in the Dutch Top 40 and was remixed by Armin van Buuren, Ultrabeat released a version in 2009 that reached number 100 in the UK, and Scala & Kolacny Brothers recorded it for their album Circle.
