In 1975 Ponty and Moran left the band, and Stu Goldberg came in on keyboards. The larger line-up toured with Jeff Beck. McLaughlin then cut the group to a quartet of himself, Goldberg, Walden and Armstrong, which made the album at the Château d'Hérouville in France in July and August 1975. It was the band's last album for nearly ten years.
The writing is shared. Walden wrote The Way of the Pilgrim and River of My Heart, Armstrong wrote Planetary Citizen, and Goldberg wrote the second part of the title track. Alan Kurtz of jazz.com wrote that the record was filled with R&B tendencies, and he set out two views of it: a weak effort to finish McLaughlin's Columbia contract, or a brave experiment. It reached 118 on the Billboard 200 and 24 on the jazz chart.
