The band's first live album, and the last record of the original line-up, was taken from the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park. A gig list dates the shows to 17 and 18 August 1973, though the surviving recordings point to the second night for all of the album's material. It stood in for the third studio album, recorded in London that June and scrapped in its final days. The live record holds versions of three of that album's six tracks. Sri Chinmoy wrote the liner notes, and Tim Geelan engineered.

Walter Kolosky called it a powerhouse of a recording in All About Jazz, though he wrote that it does not fully capture the band live and that in places Hammer can barely be heard. He wrote that Dream is often cited as one of the best of all Mahavishnu explorations. The album reached 41 in the US, and Christgau gave it a B plus.

The 2011 Complete Columbia Albums Collection used a new mix, with an extra minute of music on Sister Andrea. The same box added Unreleased Tracks from Between Nothingness & Eternity, with more material from the two Central Park shows.
