Recorded at Trident Studios in London from 25 to 29 June 1973, these were the two-track mixes of what would have been the original band's third studio album. In November 1998 the Columbia producer Bob Belden found two quarter-inch tapes in the label's Los Angeles vault while gathering material for a remastered Birds of Fire. The album came out on 21 September 1999, 26 years after the sessions. Bill Milkowski wrote the liner notes, and Christgau gave it three stars.
Only John's Song #2 had not appeared elsewhere. Dream, Trilogy and Sister Andrea were the three tracks that reached Between Nothingness & Eternity, and Goodman and Hammer put I Wonder and one other of the pieces on their 1974 album Like Children. McLaughlin told gig magazine in 1977 that there was a studio album that never got released which was really good, and that he respected it when the others told him how they felt.
