McLaughlin revived the band name in 1984 with Bill Evans, Jonas Hellborg and Mitchel Forman, and the original drummer Billy Cobham played on the sessions. Danny Gottlieb played drums live in 1985 and 1986. The album was recorded in Paris in April and May 1984 and released by Warner Bros. on 8 October. McLaughlin's extensive use of the Synclavier made it sound very different from the original band.

Evans wrote Clarendon Hills, and McLaughlin wrote the rest. Hariprasad Chaurasia plays flute, Zakir Hussain tabla and Katia Labeque keyboards and piano on When Blue Turns Gold. Albert Koski was executive producer.
