Dreaming with Alice
His one album of the period: songs recorded in Rome at nineteen, with a title song that recurs between them as short verses.
Mark Fry, 1972
The album (IT ZLST 70006) carries the title song as a series of short verse fragments between the other songs, listed as eight on the Bandcamp reissue and ten by Head Heritage, who say they run about 35 to 40 seconds each. Fry wrote the title song in a hotel room in Calabria on a trip toward Sicily, with influences he names as Lewis Carroll, Jonathan Miller's 1966 BBC Alice, C. S. Lewis and Pre-Raphaelite painting. The Bandcamp credits give the original sessions as produced by Laura Papi and mixed and mastered at RCA Studios in Rome.
The Word called it Nick Drake meets Dr. Strangely Strange with a touch of Lewis Carroll, and Fry himself recalls just one pressing and no reviews. "Song for Wilde" later appeared on Sunbeam's Shifting Sands (2010) and on MGMT's Late Night Tales (2011), and "Mandolin Man" on Love, Peace and Poetry: British Psychedelic Music (Normal Records, 2001).
