Among the Trees
A song from Window, the most-covered of his songs, which Steve Gunn has played for years.
Michael Chapman, from Window (1970)
"Among the Trees" is on Window (Harvest SHVL 786, December 1970), the third track on side one, produced by Gus Dudgeon, with Trident Studios named in the sleeve notes; recording dates were not found. Our upload is titled "Among the Trees (2014 Remaster)", a label we could not confirm. A mono version was unreleased until 2012, when it was added as a bonus track to Light in the Attic's Rainmaker CD, which is why it can also be found linked to that album, though its home is Window. It was among the songs of a BBC John Peel session. Chapman's own words about it were not found; one reader review calls it a slowly evolving hypnotic number.
Setlist.fm counts it as the most-covered Chapman song, with 35 or 36 performances recorded, mainly by Steve Gunn. Gunn recorded it for Aquarium Drunkard's Lagniappe Sessions in January 2020 at Gold Diggers in Hollywood, and played it at Rough Trade on April 13, 2019. Chapman played it on Rockpalast in Cologne on April 1, 1975, seventh of nine songs. No chart history or video was found.
