Noel Gallagher said he started writing it in Paris, and the line about Sally came when Liam asked him at a soundcheck whether he was singing it. He played an unfinished version at Sheffield Arena on 22 April 1995, telling the crowd he had written it on Tuesday. It was recorded at Rockfield in May and June 1995. Noel has said the opening piano resembles John Lennon's Imagine, and that he took the main riff from David Bowie's All the Young Dudes. He said it is about looking forward rather than back.

Released on 19 February 1996, it was the second Oasis song to reach UK number one and is certified seven times platinum. It is the second Oasis song to pass a billion Spotify streams, after Wonderwall. It has been played at almost every Oasis show. Noel Gallagher has called it his equivalent of Hey Jude, saying he would not be allowed out of the venue if he did not play it.
