Noel Gallagher began the song in 1991 while working for a building company in Manchester, and he incorporated a vocal melody from the Rolling Stones' Shine a Light. He first presented it finished to the band in early 1993, and Alan McGee recalled that first hearing as probably the single greatest moment he had experienced with them. On the album version Owen Morris cut the acoustic intro from the demo and replaced it with a drumbeat from McCarroll. Noel said he wrote it in the middle of the grunge years and wanted a more optimistic outlook. The sleeve shows John Lennon's childhood home at 251 Menlove Avenue in Liverpool.
It was released on 8 August 1994, reached number ten in the UK, and in 1995 reached two on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Two videos were made, directed by Carlos Grasso and Nick Egan. In 2006 a Q poll named it the greatest song of all time, and in 2007 the NME and XFM poll of the 50 greatest indie anthems ranked it first. Pitchfork called it Oasis' best-ever track. After the August 2024 reunion announcement it rose to a new peak of eight on the UK Singles Chart.
