Released on 10 October 1994 as the fourth single from Definitely Maybe, it peaked at number seven in the UK and spent 82 weeks on the UK Top 100 between 1994 and 1998. McGee said on first hearing it that it was one of the greatest social statements of the past 25 years. Commentators have long noted that its main guitar figure resembles T. Rex's Get It On, and Alex Niven called it a twelve-bar blues rock song in his 2014 book on the album. Noel Gallagher declined to release Slide Away as a fifth single, saying a debut album could not have five.
The CD single carried I Am the Walrus, Listen Up and Fade Away. The Walrus track was credited as live at the Glasgow Cathouse, but Noel later said it was recorded at a Sony event at the Gleneagles Hotel, with crowd noise added. Rod Stewart covered the song on his 1998 album When We Were the New Boys, where it opens the record, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra also recorded it.
