Supersonic was written by Noel Gallagher and recorded in a single day at the Pink Museum Studio in Liverpool in December 1993. It was produced by the band with Mark Coyle, their live sound engineer, and Tony Griffiths of the Real People sang Beatles-influenced backing vocals. Although technically a demo, it was never re-recorded. Noel said he wrote it in half an hour while the others were eating, and that it was the only Oasis single written in the studio. He has said the main inspiration for the lyric was the engineer Dave Scott's dog, Elsa.

It was released in Ireland on 5 April 1994 and in the UK on 11 April, reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the UK Independent Singles Chart, and became the band's first single to chart in the US. Two videos were made, directed by Mark Szaszy and Nick Egan. A live version recorded at the Gleneagles Hotel was released as a B-side of Live Forever. In 2024 Paste and Rolling Stone ranked it fifth and third on their lists of the greatest Oasis songs.
