Black Unity is a single composition by Sanders, recorded in New York in 1971. It fills two LP sides of 18:28 and 18:51, and the 1997 CD reissue joins them as one 37:21 track. Stanley Clarke and Cecil McBee play bass, Norman Connors and Billy Hart drums, and Joe Bonner piano. Hannibal Marvin Peterson is on trumpet and Carlos Garnett on flute and tenor saxophone. Sanders adds soprano saxophone and balafon, and Lawrence Killian plays conga, balafon, talking drum and percussion.

Lee Young produced it, Tony May engineered it, and Thembi Sanders wrote the liner notes. Promises has since been compared to it as another album built from one composition.
