Deaf Dumb Blind was recorded at A and R Studios in New York on 1 July 1970. Its Arabic title, Summun Bukmun Umyun, comes from verse 18 of Surat al-Baqarah in the Qur'an, and the liner notes say the album is predicated on spiritual truths. Sanders led an octet with Woody Shaw on trumpet, Gary Bartz on alto saxophone, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Nat Bettis and Anthony Wiles on African percussion. Sanders himself plays soprano saxophone, cow horn, bells, tritone whistle, wood flute and thumb piano.

The record is split into two side-long sessions, the title track and Let Us Go into the House of the Lord, which Smith arranged. Martin-McCormick wrote in Pitchfork that it may be Sanders's finest work from this era, and that the group "breathes as one like never before."
