Tauhid was the second album released under Sanders's name and his first for Impulse!. He recorded it on 15 November 1966, four days after the concert heard on Coltrane's Offering: Live at Temple University, and it came out in 1967, after Coltrane's death. It was Sonny Sharrock's first appearance on a record and one of Dave Burrell's earliest. Anthology Recordings reissued it in 2017.

Sanders wrote in the liner notes that he was not trying to scream on his horn but to put all his feelings into it. Daniel Martin-McCormick of Pitchfork wrote that the album plays like a mission statement and that its three pieces are suites rather than head-and-solo numbers. Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt takes the Acknowledgement section of A Love Supreme as a starting point. Japan lasts under four minutes, a pentatonic march with Sanders singing and no solos. Gary Giddins called it "the first and best of Pharoah Sanders's Impulse albums."
