Recorded at Studio Bogolan in Bamako in the summer of 2016 by Yaya Diarra, Kidal was produced by Mark Mulholland and mixed by David Odlum at Studio Black Box. Glitterbeat issued it on 17 March 2017. Nicolas Grupp played drums on the record.
Ben Richmond, reviewing it for Afropop Worldwide, wrote that Ag Mossa had found another gear for his voice, a deeper register, and singled out the dual acoustic guitars of Tanakra and the pastoral acoustic closer Adad Osan Itibat. Ag Mossa told the same writer that Kidal talks about dignity, and that many people see the desert only as a market to sell to multinational companies, which he called a major threat to the survival of nomadic people. Nigel Williamson gave it five stars in Songlines, writing that the music "blazes with a righteous intensity that is almost scary".
