Hot Shots II

It opens Hot Shots II and is built on a sample from the Günter Kallmann Choir's 1970 version of Daydream, a Wallace Collection song. The band intended Squares, with Won on the other side, as the lead single, filmed a video and had promo discs pressed. When I Monster's Daydream in Blue, using a sample from the same Kallmann recording, was due out around then, they released Broke first. Squares came out as a single in February 2002 and reached 42 in the UK.

Maddy Costa of the Guardian heard it set the scene, with Mason singing of daydreams over a heady bassline and icy piano notes. Amy Granzin of Pitchfork called it a masterpiece of minimal trip-pop, and in 2001 a Pitchfork interviewer told Mason he had seen it in rotation on MTV2. It appears on The Best of The Beta Band, and a live version is on the second disc of that set.
