It opens Champion Versions, the EP released in July 1997, and was collected on The Three E.P.'s in 1998. The trumpet was played by Jonathan Levien, credited as Jon Levien. He was at the Royal College of Art, met John Maclean in the Art Bar and said he could make interesting whale sounds on a trumpet. He was invited to a studio in Chalk Farm and asked to play three riffs.
Mark Richardson of Pitchfork ranked it number 57 on the site's Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s. He wrote of a terrifically stoned loping groove, slide guitar riffs and an arrangement that builds steadily from one verse to the next, and compared its structure to Hey Jude. In 2001 Maddy Costa of the Guardian called it the band's shambling epic.
In March 2000 it was the song John Cusack's character plays in High Fidelity before saying he will sell five copies of The Three EPs. According to the Guardian, Cusack recommended the song for the scene, and Astralwerks reported that sales of the album quadrupled within a month. It has since appeared in the television series Reacher and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It was in the set at the Leeds University show on the 2004 farewell tour, and a live version is on the second disc of The Best of The Beta Band.
