Titanic Rising
The fourth Weyes Blood album and her first on Sub Pop: ten songs about loss, memory and a world going under.
Weyes Blood, 2019
Jonathan Rado and Mering produced it, except "Mirror Forever", which Rado made with Brian D'Addario. It was recorded at Sonora Studios in Los Angeles during 2018 (Wikipedia gives three months in 2018 in its text and 2018 to 2019 in its infobox; Sub Pop says the first half of 2018), engineered by Dave Cerminara and mixed by Kenny Gilmore. Michael and Brian D'Addario of the Lemon Twigs, Blake Mills, Chris Cohen, Drew Erickson and a string section played on it. The title refers to the 1997 film; Mering has called herself a fallen Christian, said she was writing to a past self and cited An Inconvenient Truth as part of the push, and told Dazed that she did not want to make something depressing but something sorrowful.
The cover shows Mering underwater in a childhood-bedroom set built and filmed in a pool in Long Beach with Brett Stanley, about two hours before the particle board took on too much water. Pitchfork gave it 8.5 and Uncut 9 out of 10. It reached number 68 in the UK, number 6 on the US alternative chart and number 3 on the US Heatseekers.
