Movies

Track six of Titanic Rising, the album's third single, about a teenager who stopped believing in films.
Weyes Blood, from Titanic Rising (2019)

"Movies" is the sixth song on Titanic Rising, 5:53 long and written by Mering. It was the third and last single, released on March 19, 2019 with a video Mering directed herself. It opens with synthesizer arpeggios before strings come in. NOW Toronto heard a turn toward Enya-like mysticism, and one review called it the album's centre.

Mering has said the song is about losing faith in films as a teenager. She told NME she refused to watch movies for three years, feeling they had lied to her, and came back through David Lynch's Mulholland Drive and independent cinema; she told The Current she "couldn't stand it anymore" and "just wanted the reality". The video begins underwater and moves to a cinema where the audience rushes through the screen; she wanted, she told Stereogum, "a more Lynchian way of expressing the sentiment".

On setlist.fm it has been played 192 times, third among her songs behind "Andromeda" (196) and "Everyday" (193), out of 335 listed shows. On the In Holy Flux tour it often ended the main set, as at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on October 4, 2023. Covers and samples were not found.
