Tyler wrote it with Richie Supa, a longtime friend and former bandmate, and Bruce Fairbairn produced. Geffen released it in November 1993 as the fourth single from Get a Grip. Don Henley sings with Tyler on parts of it. The lyric concerns Tyler's troubled life and drug abuse after the band broke up, and it names the album Permanent Vacation and its title song. On the album a radio is heard tuning into Lucky Millinder's Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well as the song ends.
It reached number 24 on the Hot 100, number 3 on the Album Rock Tracks chart and number 58 in the United Kingdom. Marty Callner directed the video, with Alicia Silverstone and Jason London as two young people who meet in virtual reality. It was nominated at the 1994 Billboard Music Video Awards. Music & Media called the song the ultimate stadium rock ballad.
