The second single from Pump, released on 8 November 1989 on Geffen with Voodoo Medicine Man as its B-side, was produced by Bruce Fairbairn. Tyler wrote the main riff on a keyboard in a low-tone setting, Hamilton wrote the bassline and Perry the solo. The bass sound comes from a Korg M1 Slap Bass patch. The album intro Water Song features Randy Raine-Reusch on glass harmonica, wind gong and bullroarers.

The lyric tells of a young woman who kills her sexually abusive father. Tyler said he drew on a magazine article about handgun deaths and on women he met in recovery, and that he was angry that nobody honored people abused by their parents. A lyric was softened for radio at the label's urging. The single reached number 4 in the United States, number 2 on the Mainstream Rock chart, number 1 in Australia and number 2 in Canada. David Fincher directed the video, which stars Kristin Dattilo, Nicholas Guest and Lesley Ann Warren. The song won the 1990 Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and the 1990 MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video.
