Hamilton wrote the music, starting from a bass riff he had come up with in high school. Producer Jack Douglas said Kramer's backbeat made the track distinctive. It was recorded on 14 March 1975 at the Record Plant in New York. Tyler sang lead and played sugar packet and vibraslap, Perry played lead guitar and talk box and sang backing vocals, Whitford played rhythm guitar, Hamilton bass, and Kramer drums and percussion. Jay Messina played marimba.

The single reached number 36 on the Hot 100, their first Top 40 hit, and number 56 in Canada. It has gone three times platinum in the United States, Gold in the United Kingdom and Platinum in New Zealand. Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs list gives it number 416 or 408, depending on which place in the same article you read. The song opens the 1993 film Dazed and Confused and has been used in We're the Millers (2013) and the Inside Out teaser (2015). A remix appeared on the Armageddon soundtrack in 1998.
