Diane Warren
Released
18 August 1998

Diane Warren wrote it as the theme for the film Armageddon (1998), and it appeared on Armageddon: The Album. Warren took the phrase from a Barbara Walters interview with James Brolin and Barbra Streisand. U2 were asked first, and Aerosmith came in after Liv Tyler was cast in the film. It was recorded at The Hit Factory in New York with Matt Serletic producing. US radio began playing it on 18 and 19 May 1998, the American single came out on 18 August on Columbia, with Japan on 29 July and the United Kingdom on 31 August.

It spent four weeks at number one on the Hot 100 in September and October 1998, the band's only American number one, and reached number 4 in the United Kingdom. The video was shot at the Minneapolis Armory in May 1998, with a cameo by Liv Tyler. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 71st Academy Awards and lost to When You Believe.
