Rooty came out on 25 June 2001 on XL in the UK and Astralwerks in the US, and reached number 5 in the UK. Its name comes from their regular club event in Brixton, and the cover shows Snowflake, the albino gorilla. Buxton described the idea as not geared to one specific vibe, and the duo said the title meant raw and soulful, and about being happy with things that do not fit in.

Janet Jackson praised Remedy during a July 2000 appearance on TRL and contacted the duo. They asked her to work on Get Me Off, but she declined. Five singles came from the album: Romeo on 4 June 2001, Jus 1 Kiss, Where's Your Head At on 19 November 2001, Get Me Off in 2002, and, in Australia only, Do Your Thing in 2003. Samples include Chic's You Can't Do It Alone on Jus 1 Kiss, Earth, Wind & Fire on Breakaway and Gary Numan on Where's Your Head At.

AllMusic's John Bush gave it five stars, and Entertainment Weekly and Robert Christgau both gave it A-. Pitchfork's 2001 review called Buxton and Ratcliffe two of the weirdest, most innovative and talented house producers on the scene, but said they had taken kitsch a few steps too far, and singled out Crazy Girl as downright stunning. Q listed it among the 50 best albums of 2001. It was reissued in late 2022.
