Romeo was released on 4 June 2001, three weeks before Rooty. Kele Le Roc sings lead and Corryne Dwyer sings the backing vocals. Buxton and Ratcliffe wrote and produced it, and it samples Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By by Cloud One from 1981. It was one of the first songs recorded for the album, and it began with Buxton singing the line I used to be your Romeo. An acoustic version appeared on the EP Xxtra Cutz.
It reached number 6 in the UK, number 1 on the UK dance and independent charts, number 5 on the US Dance Club Play chart, number 10 in Canada, and the top 10 in New Zealand and Norway. The video, a tribute to Indian films of the 1960s and 1970s, stars Divya Dutta in a story of two men fighting for her love, ending with a dance in front of a temple.
Pitchfork's Malcolm Seymour gave it a mixed review, but Pitchfork later put it at number 50 on its top 500 tracks of the 2000s. PopMatters' Andy Hermann called it a signature Jaxx dancefloor anthem, and the BBC's Lou Thomas called it a bittersweet pop classic. In 2018 the House & Garage Orchestra recorded an orchestral version with Le Roc.
