Remedy was released on 10 May 1999 in the UK and on 3 August 1999 in the US, both by XL. The duo were unhappy with the state of dance music, which they called linear and close-minded, and chose the title as an antidote. Four singles came from it: Red Alert on 19 April 1999, Rendez-Vu on 2 August, Jump n' Shout on 25 October, and Bingo Bango in 2000. Red Alert was their first single to reach number 1 on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
Several tracks lean on samples. Red Alert uses Far Beyond by Locksmith, Same Old Show uses Hip Hop vs. Rap by KRS-One, On My Radio by The Selecter and Ooooh Baby by Veda Simpson, and Bingo Bango uses Merenque by Bolivar. Guests include Blue James on Red Alert, Slarta John on Jump n' Shout, Monday Michiru on Always Be There and DJ Sneak on Sneakalude.
It reached number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the UK independent chart, was number 73 on the 1999 UK year-end albums chart, and was certified platinum in the UK in 2013. Metacritic gives it 88 out of 100. AllMusic's John Bush called it one of the most assured, propulsive full lengths dance had seen since Daft Punk's Homework. Entertainment Weekly's Marc Weingarten called it a blissful joy ride. Robert Christgau wrote that, like much good house, it was more fun than reading the newspaper and less fun than advertised, and the A.V. Club said it was nowhere near as revolutionary as the hype suggested. Rolling Stone ranked it number 13 on its 2012 list of the 30 greatest EDM albums, and it is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
