The choruses use drums from Pretty Purdie's Soul Drums and the verse beat comes from Them's cover of James Brown's Out of Sight. The riff is a replayed interpolation of a Them track, I Can Only Give You Everything. The one part Beck played himself is the central riff, through a fuzzed 20-watt amp, according to MusicTech. Sample notes in the US CD credits list a sample of Out of Sight, performed by Them, and of Purdie's Soul Drums, plus elements of I Can Only Give You Everything by Philip Coulter and Thomas Scott. The Guardian ranked it 13th among Beck's songs and described the three-note riff as copied from the Them song. Asked in 2026 what a devil's haircut looks like, Beck described something with a rockabilly edge and mentioned the Australian sharpies, who wore a bizarre version of a mullet.

It reached number 22 in the United Kingdom, 23 on the Modern Rock chart and 94 on the Hot 100. Noel Gallagher, the Dust Brothers and Mickey P all made remixes, and an Aphex Twin remix appeared later on The New Pollution release. Mark Romanek directed the video, shot in New York City, which won Best Editing and Best Male Video at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards. Setlist.fm logs 803 plays.
