Rise Above opens Damaged. The version on the album was recorded in an earlier session with Rollins and was meant to be a single on its own. Another take recorded during the album sessions was abandoned. A different version of Depression was made as the B-side.
Rolling Stone singled it out with TV Party in its 500 Greatest Albums entry, and Trouser Press called it the classic American punk anthem. Vice used the word anthemic. A 2002 tribute album, Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three, shares its title.
