Brat

A rave-minded, lime-green pop album that was both her most confrontational record and her most vulnerable.

Released
7 June 2024
Label
Atlantic
Producer
Charli XCX, A. G. Cook, Finn Keane, Cirkut, George Daniel and others

Brat is Charli's sixth studio album and the first after she signed a new recording contract in early 2023. It draws on the English rave scene of the 2000s and has a more aggressive club sound than Crash. She called it her most aggressive and confrontational record, and also her most vulnerable, and said it was probably the closest album to Pop 2 in its ethos. Production came from Charli herself, A. G. Cook, Finn Keane, Cirkut and George Daniel, among others.

It was announced on 28 February 2024, a day before the lead single Von dutch. 360 followed on 10 May and Apple was serviced to radio in August. A deluxe edition called Brat and It's the Same but There's Three More Songs So It's Not arrived on 10 June with "Hello Goodbye", "Guess" and "Spring Breakers". A remix album with 20 guest artists came out on 11 October 2024.

Several songs are about other people. "Girl, So Confusing" concerns a contentious relationship with another female artist, confirmed as Lorde, who appeared on its remix. "Rewind" was written as a direct response to "Speed Drive", and on "I Think About It All the Time" Charli considers motherhood after meeting her collaborator Noonie Bao's baby.

The cover is a lime-green square with the title in lowercase Arial, designed by the New York studio Special Offer, Inc. Designer Brent David Freaney looked at around 500 shades over a five-month process, and Charli said she wanted an off-trend shade of green that would trigger the idea of something being wrong.

Metacritic gave Brat 95 from 25 critics, the highest score of any 2024 album. Pitchfork's Meaghan Garvey called it one of the best pop albums of the year, and The Guardian's Laura Snapes called it a masterpiece. In the UK it debuted at number two with 27,234 units and reached number one after the remix album. In the US it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 77,000 units, her highest-charting album there. It was shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize and nominated for nine Grammys, winning three.
