The album was released in France in June 2014 and reached number 2 on the French chart. A reworked edition for the United States followed on 16 October 2015, titled Christine and the Queens, with English lyrics and new beats from Ash Workman. Two songs were replaced by three new ones: Jonathan with Perfume Genius and No Harm Is Done with the rapper Tunji Ige. That edition reached Britain on 26 February 2016 under the original French title, and reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart on 29 July 2016. It reached number 1 in Ireland and Wallonia. In the artist's own account, the album is a dream about adolescence, Saint Claude is stream of consciousness inspired by rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, and the percussion on Here was inspired by Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight.

Laura Snapes of Pitchfork noted that the record begins with a declaration on iT and heard gorgeous minimal production there. Kitty Empire of the Observer called the songs stylish and empathetic. Metacritic gave it 85 from 11 reviews.
