Gun first played on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show on 27 May 2013 and came out in Britain as a download and a pink 12-inch single. The video was released on 14 June 2013, and remixes by Groundislava and Jamie Isaac followed, with a remixes EP of four tracks. Rich Costey mixed it. Ian Cohen of Pitchfork gave it a Best New Track and described it as brilliantly major-key without being cloying, a song that cranks the tempo and the bitter notes in Mayberry's melodies compared with The Mother We Share and Recover. Robert Leedham of Drowned in Sound read the lyrics as an intention to emotionally dismember a former boyfriend, and Robin Murray of Clash called it compact, effortlessly catchy and stylish as hell. It was part of the typical setlist on the Love Is Dead tour.
