The first single, released in 2012 on National Anthem, was re-released in Britain on 15 September 2013 by Virgin and reached number 38 on the singles chart. It stayed the band's highest-charting single until 2019. Ian Cohen of Pitchfork reviewed it in September 2012 as a gothic synth clangor opening into a bitter lyric, and wrote that Mayberry's neon sing-song vocals made the band stand out. Kate Mossman of the Guardian called it a warm electropop wonder with a lyric so touching and humane. It won the Popjustice 20 Pound Music Prize for best British pop song in 2013, and Pitchfork ranked it number 191 on its list of the best tracks of the 2010s so far in 2014.

SJ Lee directed the video, released on 5 August 2013. The band played it on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on 19 June 2013, their US television debut, and on Later... with Jools Holland that September. Doherty said that before a BBC session they could not do an acoustic version and tried to keep it as analog as possible. It was used in the opening video of the 2014 Commonwealth Games ceremony in Glasgow, in a 2014 Marc Jacobs advertisement and on the Forza Horizon 2 radio. Half Moon Run, Soak and Eefje de Visser have covered it.
