Runaway was released on CD, cassette and 12-inch vinyl in May 1992, three weeks before the album. It topped the Billboard dance chart, Deee-Lite's fourth song to do so, and the commercial release, paired with Rubber Lover, also topped the Hot Dance Music Maxi-Single Sales chart. Gus Van Sant directed the video, which got modest airplay on MTV. It is the only single from Infinity Within that had a video.
The Washington Post's Joe Brown wrote that the hooks of Runaway and Heart Be Still were deceptively slight but infuriatingly tenacious. A MAW remix of the song appears on Sampladelic Relics and Dancefloor Oddities.
