This was Sinatra's first collaboration with the arranger Billy May. Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen wrote the title song at Sinatra's request. May's arrangement of On the Road to Mandalay offended Kipling's daughter Elsie Bambridge, and it was banned in the UK for years until 1984. The New York Times called the alteration of Kipling's poem a form of sacrilege.

The album spent five weeks at number one on Billboard and was nominated for Album of the Year at the first Grammys. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004, and AllMusic gave it five stars.
