Gordon Jenkins was first planned as the arranger but was unavailable, so Nelson Riddle took the album. Felix Slatkin conducted the session of 29 May without credit. Riddle said that having lost his mother and his daughter, perhaps the album was the result of attaching such events to music.
It reached number one on Billboard and had a 120-week chart run, and the RIAA certified it Gold on 21 June 1962. AllMusic gave it five stars, and Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums placed it at 125. It received five Grammy nominations in 1959, including Album of the Year, and won Best Album Cover for Nicholas Volpe.
